Hey. . . Hey!

I know all of you are so happy to finally hear from me again.  I understand that most of you have already shrugged me off for dead but here I am once again coming forth to brighten everybody's day!  Sunshine, bunnies, chocolate, and Matt Adrian, that's it boys, the elite club of comfort and joy bringers.

Do you find it ironic that just then I had to refer to myself by both first name and last name?  I personally do.  It has been something that has been reoccurring again and again for a year now and I keep being reminded of it by different friends, it's almost a curse really but up until a few days ago I had looked at it as more of joke rather than a striking reality.  I am only referred to by the first and last name.  It is very rare that people refer to me as just simply, "Matt."  My mom does, so does my dad but their in the minority.  Like I said, I had taken this as more of a joke for about a year now until I was hanging out with my Grandad about a week ago and he referred to me as Matt Adrian.  It was only the two of us in the room; no one would have been mistaken at just the saying of my first name.

I don't know what to attribute this to, it's not a terrible thing just, you know, funny?  Well I did some research and I can see why this is a necessary thing (to refer to me by both my names)  Over the last 25 years Matthew has been one of the most popular names given to baby boys (given to baby boys probably because most parents want to name their children early, this is more than likely due to the fact that if it were up to a 10 year old boy to pick a name he would probably pick something like "Childron, Freedom Fighter for the Universe," "Red Sox," or "Greg." Can you imagine?  Some teacher on the first day of class asking for a "Brown, Red Sox?  Red Sox Brown are you here?"  Or "Batman Smith, you get over here!").  To illustrate the point of just how popular Matthew is I made a graph, it's what I do in my free time.

Notice how it is consistently in the top 10 and not since 1981 has it been out of the top 5.  This explains why it would be necessary to use both names.  There are a lot of us out there and you just can't start throwing the name Matt around, 20% of the room is destined to have the same name.

Funny thing happened while I was doing the research on the popularity of my name.  Matthew got bumped from the top 3 in 2002 and I wanted to know why apparently Jacob has been gaining momentum for the last 8 years and moved into the number one spot.  Hey, if you're named Michael, or Joshua or even Christopher, you need to be concerned we're about to see a major name shift. Michael has been bumped from its #1 perch and Christopher, which was in the top three for over 20 years has been knocked down to #10!  We need to reclaim this country for the names of the Regan, Bush I, and Clinton eras!

Notice the rapid ascension of the name Jacob, is anyone else just a tad bit worried about this?  Next thing you know we're going to be having a President named Jacob and I think I speak for all of us when I say that would be WAY TOO FAR. Well, that's all the information any of you need.  I felt a need however to share this with a friend.  Also the statistics were gathered from the Social Security Website and if any of you have a question on where your name ranks then feel free to visit their website at double you double you double you dot S S A dot GOV slash O A C T slash babynames slash or if you will www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames

Have fun and stay out of trouble,

Matt. . . .

Adrian

Ummm....interesting. I didnt know that Jacob was getting to be such a popular name. Like you said it is necessary to say both your first and last name because if you shout "Matt" then ten heads turn around. This could take up time as you tell the other Matts that you werent talking to them. Then it becomes natural to say both your first and last name together. Hope you understand the problem. Haha.

once again, great post--had me laughing again

You're right on--I checked with my parents to confirm my gut feeling that you were the "Matt Adrian" I thought you were! I definitely remember some random night in Hutch years ago eating pizza after church. Anyway, Dan Brown has been up here in Boston teaching and he mentioned you in class today so I found it entertaining that you commented after your name was brought up. (fun times) Hope you and your family are doing well!

funny you should mention this. I have always been called by my two names also. for example: in class, teacher is taking attendance: Mark (here) John (here) Beth (here) Jim (here).... so on and so on... Jenn Earls (hmmmm) Sara (here) Matt (here) Joey (here)....

**side note** say that fast... JennEarls... what do you come up with?

plus, your post had me interested (i think that was your point... right?). i always knew that Jennifer was a popular name... there were 6 of us in my kindergarten class. So i searched through "your" website.. only to find that my parents were behind the times. Jennifer ranked #1 for 14... yes FOURTEEN.... years prior to the wonderful year of my birth (1985), when shockingly it fell to slot #3. It was a sad thing, really. I mean it's not like my parents could have been taken by surprise and not noticed that they were naming me with the third most popular girls name instead of the first... i was born in June, not January... they had plenty of time to realize and change their minds to Jessica. But... alas, i am Jennifer.

interesting stuff there Matt Adrian. Kudos

Matt, See, I have no problem calling you by your first name only. I believe you and I have the close of a relationship that I can do that, cause frankly, I care about you. I do have one complaint, I click on your hyperlink and it said that the page does not exist. Sorry. I am very disappointed with the fact that my name is not in the top 1000 name in any year. I like my name but apparently no one else does. How depressing is that. I guess thats why my first name is John, which according to http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi John got all the way up to number 10 back in 1991. AHHH the good old days!! Any whoot, Im headed to Texas to day for the wedding tomorrow, wish me luck as I see one of our best friends take the next step into manhood. What a beautiful thing. I will see ya I guess this weekend sometime. Be safe

Cheers

Quick note that back in the 60's John was number three BAM!! Your not the only popular name.   Small note as well Paul was number 19, George was 33 and Ringo was left out. Just a little food for your belly

ok i've spent a few minutes trying to figure out whether i should say "hey matt!" (which is what i would have originally done), or "hey matt adrian!" (which is what i now feel obligated to do...) So i'm doing neither. yeah..it was good to quasi-hear from you on new years. and if you see tiffany lyons..which i'm sure you will..please tell her that she sucks at the game of emailing. :)
